The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released in Japan in 1990, and elsewhere in 1991. The console was Nintendo's first 16-bit console and as a result has higher graphical capabilities than its predecessor.

In 1997, a cost-reduced redesign of the SNES was released, which consolidates the console's hardware into a single chip. However, this redesign removes the console's capability to output in RGB or S-Video, though this can be restored through modding.
