The Wii U released in 2012 as the successor to the Wii. The Wii U was the first Nintendo console to support HD graphics, and introduced a new tablet-like controller called the GamePad.

The Wii U was a commercial failure, selling only 13 million units during its lifespan. The main reason for low sales was the console's marketing; it was unclear whether the Wii U was a brand new console or merely a tablet add-on to the Wii.
